Lore About the Feycursed

In this world, dragons are female and fairies are total assholes

Alright! So, just a bit of background, now that we're at that point in the story:

Dragons and fairies don't like each other. At all. Dragons are about keeping order, tradition, history, and education. In fact, the reason they collect treasure is because of their ability to know a whole object's history by concentrating on it. This power doesn't extend to people (dragons can't know a whole person's history by touching them), because people have unreliable memories and values, while everything an object "sees" is purely... well... objective. Their fire is believed to have been fire brought to Man- and with it, knowledge, culture, and understanding. At their worst, dragons are tyrannical, demanding absolute loyalty from their mortals.

Fairies, on the other hand, are all about chaos. They play tricks on people for no reason, and their magic tends towards the Unnatural. They are darkness, the Unknown. There's no rhyme or reason or set of rules to how they work. One year, they may tell mortals to leave out a bowl of cream, to which they'll bring good luck, only in the next minute to tell them that leaving out a bowl of cream is an insult and the fairies will punish them. They happily tell heroes to avenge their fathers- only to kill the hero anyway because turns out their mother was the murderer of said father, and now the son is punished for matricide.

So. Assholes!

Not saying one is necessarily better or worse than the other (remember, Ari is just one dragon). But at least you know where you stand with dragons. If you're next week's dinner, you can bet that's not going to change.

How Sorcerers and Sorceresses are Made

These people are rare. They are mortals born with magical ability. There's two known ways in which they're created.

1) A fairy touches a pregnant mortal woman, and though her child would normally be born with a benign physical quirk, in very rare cases, they will be born with uncontrollable magical ability. There have been many instances where the child is hungry and dismembers their mother's breast across the room. For this reason, mortals would bring suspected infants to their local dragon. If the dragon determines they are an indeed a child of sorcery, they will foster the child and teach them to control their powers. Ari has never had this happen, as her parents frequently bring special care to ensure there's no Fey activity in the forests.

2) Super rare: They are the children of Dragonriders to a mortal mother. The only known examples are Patricius' daughters from his second marriage. Dragonriders over the period of decades develop and learn their own magic over time via the mix of dragon venoms and ancient knowledge. This is incredibly rare as Dragonriders usually lose interest in mortal women after a union to a dragon, and their short lifespans in compared to dragons mean they hardly ever outlive their dragons to take on a second wife. Sorceresses born this way tend to have powers that reflect a dragon's ability in some way, whether that's Pyromancy, Shapeshifting, Prophecy, or Magical Artifact Apraisal, and unlike the Feycursed, develop around puberty.
