In Which Briallen Gives Exposition Just to be Annoying

How to Write Good Exposition

Heck if I know.

Pretty sure I already wrote about this topic, but eh, what the heck.

Apparently, a very common cliche is two characters who know about the world talk to each other about things about the world with the unknowledgeable main character evesdropping. I forgot what book it was, but I remember there was one where one of these knowledgeable characters said something along the line of, "Yeah, yeah, we don't need a history lesson." So, okay, some self-awareness, but eh, still not super organic.

Of course, easier said than done.

When you do have a vast world, you can't always show, there are some points where you have to tell or you'll never get to build the world or lay the groundwork for important plot points.

What I tried to do is play off the idea that many people think exposition dumps are annoying... so what better way to do it than someone giving an exposition dump to be annoying on purpose?

Also, This week's comic's a little shorter, but believe it or not, it was Briallen's dialogue (monologue?) that took the most time (and STILL there's at least one typo! Aarg!). She has this very distinct voice. She's old (by human standards) and VERY pretentious. Everything has to be a big story or dramatization. It was a ton of fun to write.

Usually, my process is just writing the dialogue out the way I would say it, just to get the point across, sleep on it, then tweak it in the characters' distinct voices.
