Why Fanservice is Bad

For the sake of argument, I'm defining fanservice by basically what you see above: a character showing off a bit of skin. There's other definitions, like putting references to past films in their reboots, but I'm more focusing on the former.

Well, obviously, I don't think so, but according the Answer the Public, this is the keyword that people are typing in. Not "Is Fanservice Okay?" or "Should I use Fanservice in my story", but "Why Fanservice is bad.

Well, after a quick internet search, here's why (warning, snide-ness incoming):

  1. Something Something it reduces your characters to sex objects I guess
  2. It's probably supposed to make you a violent psychopath, just like video games
  3. It distracts from the story
  4. It can be viewed as lazy and it's a crutch when your story is bad/characters aren't compelling enough
  5. It's morally rephrehensible  (it's evil and bad)

Why I don't Necessarily Agree that Fanservice is Bad

I'm making comics. Comics are a visual medium. It's easier to keep the reader invested if there's nice things to look at.

I'll also admit there's a salty, edgy teenager in my brain that wants to put the middle finger to her art history classes that day and day out preached about how nude paintings and art is sexist and objectifying. I'd be lying if the F You Factor wasn't alive and well as I'm making these comics, but more importantly, the human body is beautiful. I don't think anybody disagrees with that. Hell, there was a whole movement to celebrate ALL body types rather than just the Greco-Roman ideal.

But beyond the saltiness, if you've taken a figure drawing class, you might remember that after a while, you forgot you were drawing a naked person, and just focused on the art. It's a beautiful thing, really, you'd think that humans would be lusty and ravenous while being in the same room as a naked person, but nope. We're just there. Making great art.

And, sure, there's a difference between drawing a figure and just looking at it, and I do get uncomfortable when there's an excess of fanservice (though the exact measurement, I can't really say), but what do you think? I'm interested in hearing different points of view, even if I don't agree with it.

  1. Methinks I see how Allan scored such a hot wife in the first place! Their relationship is absolutely delightful.
