This was a tough episode to do, but an important one. History is brutal. The history of any fantasy story worth telling is no different. I was using this story as a means of answering a lot of questions about the world (as well as some questions some of you guys had) Where did half orcs come from? Why is Allan so obsessed with honor? Why is he, as well as the other half orcs especially so loyal to Patricius even after he's proven to be a bit of a schemy troll?
I almost had a draft where the nuns weren't as nice to the orphaned children- mostly because, yeah, they were a reminder of all the trauma that took place- but then I decided against it. If nothing else, Allan is telling the story and, as you've seen before, he's a church-going family man who either used to be or still is one of the Knights Templar. (I'm playing with the idea that he was discerning that life, but gave it up to marry Carrie- but there's no rule saying he isn't there part-time, like he stays at one of the meetings every first Sunday after church or something- I dunno). So, his own bias wouldn't make him likely to believe the nuns were negligent or thought also that his ancestors were monsters.
