The Dark Rider

Don't Worry About Numbers

Hey, so I thought I'd leave this blog post short because I already missed my self-imposed deadline of 8am PST (It's 8:30 as I'm writing this). Man these pages took forever to make!

So, I want to write a whole blog post about this at a later date, but I follow a couple webcomic creator Facebook groups and something I see a lot of is people worrying about "not growing readership fast enough" or "losing subscribers for seemingly no reason", and I really can sympathize. Comics take forever to make, and it can be disheartening to work so hard for so long on something and not get any appreciation for it.

I really enjoy getting comments from you guys! While I usually get around 4 comments per comic, I was really proud of the work I did last week, and... well... hardly anyone commented! Oh well! And it was a little sad, but I know you guys have busy lives, and in fact, I like to imagine you were all on a hiking vacation taking a break from social media, because, let's face it, there's hardly anything good on social media right now, and I can accept this little escapist fantasy might not be enough.

But, even so, this comic has really helped me improve my art. My practice using the digital medium landed me four commissions this month, and I love this story and characters and never get tired of writing it. If I die, and this is what I'm known for, then I'll be happy.

And that's what creating content should be, until you've been at it enough and are making money full time, if you love what you're doing, and are doing that instead of wasting time on YouTube or gaming (ahem, guilty!), then that will keep you going long enough!

I know love doesn't pay the bills, but the reality is, anything worth having isn't an overnight success. And I feel like we've grown up in a world where we're so used to instant gratification that taking time to create something isn't something we have a lot of patience for. That's why it's important when you're creating something to really love what you're making, to know that it's your purpose, that you never get sick of it.

If you would like to leave a comment today, then please tell me about what kind of art you're making! I know some of you had sent me stories you're working on, and I still need to read them. Even just vent and say how hopeless you might feel (and send me a link to your art or comic), and I'll try to reply with some words of encouragement.

Have a happy Tuesday. Love you all!
