Angsty Heroes

Back when I was in high school, I remember angsty heroes being a thing: Cloud Strife and Edward from Twilight to name a few. I don't know if that's still a thing in fiction. My old instincts sometimes kick in and I want to make Matthias a bit angsty, but it does get old fast, doesn't it?

He's more of an adult than not- plus because of what happened to him, he was forced to grow up quickly, so I like to think while he does have PTSD from his home being burned and family slaughtered by dragonslayers he doesn't wallow in self-pity over it. Trying to survive on his own for the past three years, dwelling on it doesn't do him any good. To him, it's not useful. So, if he does need to bring up his past like here, he just gets quiet, but no dramatic angsty scene over it.

So, what do you think? Is it best just to let the past stay in the past? Or do you need to understand and resolve it before you can truly move on? I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
